Subject: Will the Mega Evolutions change the metagame? Fri Aug 09, 2013 12:07 pm
As of yesterday a new mechanic has been leaked, mega Evolutions. Various old favourite's have gotten a new temporary evolutions that will boost their stats in battle. Amongst this new feature MegaMewtwo, MegaLucario, MegaBlaziken, MegaAmpharos, MegaAbsol, MegaMawile have been revealed. they all get new abilities that will change the metagame as we know it.(barring MegaBlaziken that retains it's old Hidden Ability: Speed Boost).
MegaMewtwo
MegMewtwo was first known as Awakend/Eclair Mewtwo, this is for a good reason since it gets the Ability Insomnia when it temporary evolves into MegaMewtwo. This states that it will no longer be a victim of Darkrai's Dark Void
MegaLucario
Lucario has always been a very popular and powerful Pokémon but now it has reached the next level. As it's new ability it gets Adaptability meaning that it's STAB moves will no longer do X1.5 damage but a whopping X2. Will it launch the most powerful Close Combat in the whole game. It has also been mentioned that it's stat will mainly increase in Attack EDIT: It will need the Lucarionite to evolve
MegaBlaziken
As for now, not many changes are known for our old chicken as it retains speed boost. However it's evolution is the most complicated as it's needs the Blazikenite as a Torchic before it can become Megablaziken. However the Blazikenite can not be legally obtained in the game. However the first event for X and Y will distribute a Blazikenite Torchic.
MegaAmpharos
With the release of it's new Mega Evolution, Ampharos has been gifted with a new typing; Electric/Dragon and it's new ability is Mold Breaker. With Mold breaker as it's ability, we can only assume that it will have access to moves that bring down Sturdy, levitate etc..
MegaAbsol
Game freak has answered the long lasted prayer for an Absol evolution. Although this evolution is not permanent, it will surely be helpful since be a true force in the new metagame as it's stats will increase in mainly Attack and Speed. It also gains a new ability in Magic Bounce, meaning that he is immune to a lot of status dealing and indirect damage dealing moves.
MegaMawile
This guy has gone through a Mega Update as it is now both as standard Mawile and MegaMawile a Steel/Fairy type. The cherry on the cake should be that it now has Huge power meaning that it's attack stat will outpace most choice band users with exceptions. Not to forget that he will be a class 1 dragon killer with it's new typing
They have been shown to evolve during battle
What do you guys expect from this Mega Update?

In one place, I read that there will be mega evolutions for galvantula, altaria, swirliz and GROUDON!! Answering the question, I do think it will change the metagame to a certain extent. In conclusion, this is a huge (possibly the biggest) upgrade for X and Y..

Wow, if those Pokemon will be getting Mega Evolution, they will jump to the next level. X and Y might just be more interesting then it looks.

I'm not sure what to expect. Since it's in-battle only and they have to be holding an item, I believe that's the trade off: they basically can't get another item. I'm wondering how big the stat changes are, though. If it's something insane like granting Mewtwo + 45 base sp atk or something, then they'll run rampant. If not, then Idk. If they get too overpowered they'll be banned though, so we'll see. I'm curious what Game Freak is scheming.

Not only does MegaMawile get a huge boon in power literally called... huge power, but it was also confirmed that the mega-evolution of Mawile boosts its defense and special defense! It seems our steel/fairy friend has become the vary definition of a dragon slayer. And it also looks like that the powerful dragon types finally have an excuse to cry themselves to sleep at night!

Personally I don't think so because I predict that any Pokémon holding a Megastone will not be able to participate in WiFi battles and such sort of like with the Soul Dew.

Honestly, I'd be pretty sad if that were the case. Since you can only have one on your team I think it'd be neat to see who everyone chooses since basically everybody becomes entitled to one super-powerful Pokémon.

FYI Mega Kangashkhan gets the ability parental bond which allow both the mother and the child to attack in the same turn, ie. doubling the attack.

I personally think that the Mega Evolutions will most likely be shifted to the Uber tier and in some weaker cases such as Mawile, probably the OU tier as that is where the most Dragon's reside. I do believe that many Pokémon will lose their ranks in OU as MegaMawile will most likely be able to form a strong wall against the current threats. Apparently Fairy is not very effectivve against Fire so I can only assume that many Fire types will most likely be promoted to the OU tier since Fairy seems to look like the new dominating type knocking the Dragons of their everlasting throne. I am also pretty confident that the Megastones can only be utilized when you wield them as you will have an extra button that will start the Mega Evolution. If Mega Pokémon were to be able to hold an item, the entire metagame would fall out of balance as they would become to OP, especially Mewtwo as it already is a huge threat in the Uber tier

Do keep in mind that while a second attack was confirmed, it's strength wasn't.
The second hit could very well be at 50% or 75% of the original. That way using Giga Impact or something similair would do 225-ish instead of an insane 300 base power. Kanga can already learn Double Hit, so that will be interesting, and moves that have secondary effects or higher crit ratios (etc.) really make me curious how they're going to balance all that stuff.

Um... I am not so sure if this is how mega works... xD Nah, joking, I think mega Pokemon will be awesome but it still lacks some information about how will this meta change the game. Bulbapedia has an article about it but it is very incomplete. Click here for donuts

Not exactly sure if Mega Evo's will make a HUGE difference, because a huge part of competitive battling is about strategy, and items take a big part in that. Mega Evo's will almost never be scarf fast, unless they boost, meaning that unless Fairy resist's fighting, Terrakion will be seeing even MORE use than it already is, balancing OU a little, and there is no way a Mawille can safely switch in on a Terrakion. Also Volcarona will be seeing some use as well seeing that Steel/Fairy isn't good against Fire either, and if fire is good against fairy then Volcarona will be 4x effective to Mega Mawille.

who says Mawile has to go against Terrakion? I most certainly would switch out the only thing i would use Mawile for is for killing dragons because we all know almost everyone who plays OU has or has had a dragon type on there team and we all know how devastating dragon types can be. So a solid or at least decent check and counter to dragons is a pretty big difference in my book. But that's just my opinion.

He has a point though, as all the confirmed Mega Evolutions barring Mega Mewtwo and Mega Ampharos are weak to a Terrakion . Bug Kills Absol and Mewtwo, Fighting kills Lucario, Kanghaskan and Absol and Mawile (if fairy doesn't make it resistant), Rock kills Blaziken, ground kills Blaziken, Lucario, Mawile and Ampharos. Unless the Mega Stones have their secondary affects other then the fact that Mega Pokemon have a specific increase in stat, it will most likely cripple them to already powerful Pokemon as there is usually always one choiced Pokemon in every team. Unless the increase in speed in drastic, they might be facing a harder time but yes of course, it is not because you have a Mega Pokemon you will just let it be death fodder to a Pokemon and you will most likely switch out, however I do believe Game Freak had a catch for making these Pokemon stronger as they must keep the balance. Making them better is good but they must always keep in mind that they shouldn't make the Pokemon OP.

The problem with Terrakion is that it pretty much is the Second hand ruler to Dragons, because no Pokemon in OU can try to switch in and take small amounts of damage from it. Even Pokemon that resist still take a good chunk off, not to mention Banded Terrakion basically 2HKO'd the entire metagame. Unless you have a ghost, switching out to something to take a CC from Terrakion and have the potential to be predicted is not a good idea. Also Volcarona. When you switch out it's basically a free set up, pretty dangerous on a volcarona. But yeah I wasn't really talking about strats I was really talking about how Mega Pokemon aren't as so OP as everyone seems to think.

These are so awesome!!! I am in love with Mega Blastoise. His three cannons are of the hook! I also like Mega Charizard for his new ability, Drought. Looks like he'll shoot to OU lol.

I really think the mega Kanto starters look terrible. About the ability Mega Launcher, i think it will not only the power of the moves water pulse and dark pulse (the only two moves with pulse in their name), but also moves like hydro pump and hydro cannon and maybe all beam moves
